Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products?
Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products?
When doing research for my music video I learnt a lot about the conventions of
music videos. In a lot of music videos the conventions are very basic and are
common features with a lot of music videos. This includes close up shots on the
artist, the camera angles often change to a beat to make it more effective. Also
the will be usually something else going on in the music video.
After doing my research into music videos and there conventions, both me and
Liam as a group figured out the conventions that fit into the style of the song, we
ended up using a lot of these typical conventions because we believed using
these will create a better music video. For instance we did close-ups on our
singer then we would put in a transition and go to the story that goes on through
out the music video.
We also had to do our research into the conventions of a digipak, the conventions
I found the were images, songwriters, song producers, track listing, name of
artist and details of tracks. I also had to create a poster to advertise the digipak.
The cover of the eureka machines is the style i went for, however i had to make it different because they have four members and they all feature in this album cover, whereas i have one band member. Because of this I made jason (our musician) central and much larger. Also the eureka machines album cover is an actual painting that has been printed on to all the albums, where as i have had to use a normal photo and effects on photoshop to give it a portrait style.
This is a plain style, however it is a affective in the way of showing that this is Jason's solo project by just having him on the front cover and having him central of the cover, this shows that it is all about him. Also with the name of the band being The Jason Smith Project shows the target audience that this is his project.
I had to do research into the conventions of advertisement of a digipak, most posters have the name of the band, release date, the image on the digipak cover, price and where you can get it.

Q2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Q2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
My main product is a music video, we did this to the song called sunrise and the genre of the song is acoustic rock. But the song is about teens that are bullied or suffer with depression, a lot of the lyrics where inspired by “the bully project” which is a project to get all bully victims together and get them say enough is enough and they can talk about there problems and what they have been through together. So throughout our video we have an actor on his own showing that he’s lonely and depressed, we show you him writing in his diary and near to the end he hangs himself, but he then wakes up and it was all just a dream. We also have Danny playing the guitar in the same wooded area, and Jason is the one singing the lyrics about our actor, we wanted to give the feel that Jason is singing to the actor and even though he feels alone now it will get better he doesn't give up on himself, he's just got to keep going.
Theme, the majority of the shots are in a wooded area or a park bench of him on his own, also when Jason is singing we have him in front of the Liverpool skyline the way the lighting is it almost looks green screened. The is a clear link between our music video and the digipak as the singer features in both. The main product and ancillary tasks represents our artist’s image, as they are both down to earth, this video shows real life problems such as depression that leads people to suicide.
Our audience is more of teenage to early 20’s crowd, and the purpose of this song is for people to be able to relate what’s going on, how just being lonely can cause depression and if it goes untreated the proper way it can lead to other things. So the purpose of it is trying to get people to relate and reach out for help. Therefore we have tried to create a music video that people can relate to by showing them what everyday problems such as just being lonely or getting bullied could lead to, or what they're already thinking of doing. My ancillary tasks are plain but i have followed my style models, I went for a similar style to the Eureka Machines Remain In Hope album. this has the four of them on the front, they have prints of a painting of the four them sent in from a fan on the front. Whereas I've only used Jason on the front of mine and I've edited a photo of him and used a art effect on him to give me this style.

Q3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
For audience feedback I did a focus group. I showed them are music video and the group of people a couple of questions, and then asked for any other feedback they could give me. The people in my focus group were all aged 16-20 (our target audience), we asked them how effective is our music video, this question had 3 tick boxes the first one was 'very effective' the second one was 'a bit effective' and the last one was 'not effective'. Four people ticked 'very effective' and six people ticked 'a bit effective' no one picked 'not effective'.
When asked what could we improve on? everyone said the were part of the video were camera shook a lot and it put them off or it hurt there eyes. Also one person pointed out the is one bit were Jason is sining out of sync and it irritated them. When we asked them what did they like about the music video most said the really like the angles we experimented with and others liked transitions we used. Most of them also really enjoyed the mise-en-sceneused through out the video.
How we improved from feedback
We went out and re-recorded the scenes that had a lot of camera shake, this improved the quality of our video, and after going through the video on Imovie we fixed the bits were jason was out of sync.
When we made these changes we got the same group of people to watch our video and they all said it had improved greatly.

Q4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
In the construction stage of creating our music video we used a lot of technology, such as a video camera. The video camera was needed to actually film the video. We also used an apple mac to construct our video; we used the apple mac software (IMovie) to do so, IMovie is good in the way that its pretty basic and for someone that has never used software like this before it makes it easier to put together a pretty good product. The way IMovie is set out is good, it has all the recordings spread out at the bottom and the clips you pick out go to the top, this was helpful to put all the recording together and see what we needed and what we didn’t. When we figured out what recording we were going to use we could then start putting everything in place. The apple mac was used a lot for research and planning. I did a lot of research on different songs using the apple mac, this was the key piece of technology I used, without it we wouldn't have a video. It was used for research, construction of the video, photoshop and to get onto blogger.
We used Google maps to find locations for the music video. Google maps was very useful in the way we could look for good areas to record our video but in a distance ewe could travel. We also used YouTube a lot, this was very helpful in finding music videos that inspired us to create our video in the way we did. It was also helpful because we could read the comments on the video and see what people liked and what they didn't.

The apple mac was very useful for planning, because it allowed to access blogger. Blogger is very useful to post all of our work and planning we have done. Blogger also let us see each other’s work and give some feedback. Blogger was used a lot in our project to post our progression through out, it was also a good way of keeping track of our progression while working. Blogger was useful in the way we could post pictures and videos to show were we got ideas and inspiration from. To me blogger was like a diary, it was constantly getting updated. I used Microsoft word to construct my questioner to get audience feedback, when i got the results back I went back onto the apple mac and went onto Microsoft excel to put the answers together and get a better look at the results.
